Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder ( Adhd ) Essay

Although many more chronical illnesses are discussed in the DSM-V, one of the most recurrent ones, especially among children, is Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. ADHD, as it’s commonly known, is among few others, one of the most diagnosed mental disorders in the United States. Moreover, its prevalence is, by a great margin, high among males rather than females, and the usual identification age varies from the time in which children enter preschool to when they reach twelve years’ old (Ronald J. Comer). It is vital that symptoms for such disorder are identified correctly within a short time frame, for ADHD is known for stunting a child’s academic and behavioral development. For a successful ADHD diagnosis, several elements must be present, and prevalent in a child for at least six months. Such include, disorganized thoughts, feelings, or actions, inability to maintain attention, fails to carry out instructions or finish tasks, dislike or avoidance to perfor m mentally effortful work, excessive talk, constant movement and a recurrent pattern of disobedience, among others. At least six of these symptoms must be shown throughout a continuous period of six months or more in a manner that is maladaptive and beyond that shown by most similarly aged persons. She observed them smoking, drinking, and even cheating on their men. As a result, Irina started smoking, drinking, and having multiple boyfriends. Now, Irina is addicted to smoking, and drinking caused by vicarious reinforcement and those were her Indian friends at college, who she does not socialize with now. What do you feel was the strongest influence on your attitude? The strongest influence on Irina’s’ attitude will be her parents. Irina blames her parents for her negative attitude because she was mentally and physically abused while she was a child, but she refuses to abuse her children. I have to agree with Irina, when she said that punishment is a better way to rise up your children, not abuse. Another strongest influence of her positive attitude will be her husband. She mentioned that her husband kindness, caress, and forgiveness had motivated her to change her life for better, by focusing more on her family, and peruse an education, by obtaining a career on arts (Irina Dinova, personal communication, November 30, 2012). 7. What role do you think of a person’s race, gender, or ethnicity play when performing that person’s personality and attitudes? Irina believes that a person’s race, gender, or ethnicity play a role in forming someone’s’ personality and attitude. She said that she had never experienced prejudice and discrimination until she had immigrated to the Unites States. She said that she was prejudiced and discriminated (University of Phoenix, 2010). at school, by a group of African Americans, and they called her names like â€Å" Russian girl† and say unpleasant words to her e. g â€Å" we are not in Russia†, â€Å" go back to Russia†, or â€Å" speak English†. Additionally, she was stereotype by her husband, as he said to her that her duties, as a married woman is to clean, cook, and raise the children, but she did not respect that opinion because in the U. S. culture a woman can work and be involved in business. Thus, she believes that a person’s personality and attitude solely depend on the culture, norms. Irina’s’ culture differs from her husband, as they are both from different countries. Irina’s husband is Algerian and has its own culture norm, values, and believe, which differ from Irina. For instance in Irina’s husband culture: a woman is prohibited to drink alcohol, or smoke, while in Irina’s’ culture is verse versa. As a result, many negative attitudes formed, in both Irina and her husband, caused by culture conflicts. Another culture conflict between Irina and her husband was circumcising her baby boy. In Irina’s culture, they do not circumcise, while in her husband’s culture, they circumcise the child after he turns four years old, which will be a big party celebration. Irina had refused to make her husbands’’ wish come true, which had formed a negative attitude from the situation in both Irina and her husband. She said that her husband still insisting and he will not let it go because it was something he was looking forward too, but Irina does not believe in circumcising, as she said that she will never allow it (Irina Dinova, personal communication, November 30, 2012). 8. Do you find yourself better at tasks when intrinsically motivated or extrinsically motivated? Irina said that she is definitely motivated extrinsically (University of Phoenix, 2010) better in most cases. However, she can also work on proprieties tasks without been extrinsically motivated. Conversely, in Irina’s words: â€Å"new things get old fast, I’m always searching for new motivations and thinking of new ways to accomplish my tasks. † (Personal communication, 11/30/2012). She also said that she hates her job, but she extrinsically motivated because of the money that will be earned. Irina referred to when she was six years old, her parents used rewards, when she obtains an A at school, but she gets punished when she obtains a lower grade. His love for video games, however landed him in trouble when, reportedly, he acquired a video game on credit from a schoolmate. He was unable to pay for it and this led the schoolmate to steal a bicycle belonging to Brewer’s father on Sunday the 11th of October 2009 as payback for the money owed. Brewer reported the theft to the police, the culprit briefly arrested, the bike taken back and the culprit released to his parents the same day. Michael knew he would have a nasty run-in with the schoolmate (we are not given the specific name, but is one of the 5 names released by the police after the incident, and thus it is hard to ascertain) and his gang of four others. He therefore skipped school on Monday, instead going to visit his friend at Lime Tree Village apartments, located in Deerfield Beach. As he was sitting by the swimming pool, the schoolmate and four of his friends appeared and, reportedly, the leader of the group (the culprit in the bike incident) commanded â€Å"pour it on him, pour it on him!†. At this, 15-year old Denver Jarvis poured rubbing alcohol on Michael. Mendez, another member of the gang, lit a cigarette lighter and threw it at the victim, setting him on fire. The latter screamed out, attracting the attention of a neighbor who came out with a fire extinguisher and put out the flames. Michael reaped off his shirt and jumped into the swimming pool while the culprits fled. He was later taken to hospital, and is expected to recuperate for 5 months. The police charged the five suspects on Tuesday 13th October 2009 with aggravated battery charges, and reported that they were considering charging the victims as adults under provisions in Florida law. Mendez, who lit the fire, was separately charged with attempted murder. Deerfield Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Feeley described the incident as â€Å"a horrible case†, and as â€Å"shocking to the community†. Brewer’s mother, brother and sister and the rescuing neighbor were interviewed and all expressed disbelief at how anyone could carry out a crime so â€Å"heinous†. Police also reported that the suspects, as they were being interviewed, were laughing about the incident. Only one of them, Denver, expressed remorse over his actions. Analysis of Media Dynamics The story was very emotive and attracted widespread reactions. An example is ABC’s online article on attracted 166 comments, most expressing outrage at how society had come to this new low. The incident featured lots of television and online coverage. At first the facts were simply reported as they were, but inevitably the reaction soon took center stage. In today’s liberalized information age, the most influential voice is the individual person with the power of the blog and ability to comment on news articles. The combined effect on news consumers of the shocking incident was fuelled by the consumers themselves, as they wrote emotive comments and started up blogs on the issue. This raised the profile of the incident to such a level that individuals and media houses took the initiative to find out the level of violence at Brewer’s school. It was reported by the Florida Department of Education that in 2009, there were 96 incidents of bullying, or roughly one in every two school days. On April 22nd, the victim, Michael Brewer appeared on the Today Show. He mentioned that his school, Deerfield Beach Middle School was â€Å"terrible†, alluding to the numerous cases of bullying at the school. The outrage from the incident led to calls for action against bullying in schools. The Principal at Brewer’s school was followed up on a few months later, where she mentioned that they had managed to bring down the incidences by half. Relation to Communication Theories Gate-keeping The Michael Brewer story, as was disseminated through most networks, was an Associated Press (AP) version. For this reason, most of the news sources were largely homogenous in their content. One noteworthy point in the AP reporting was in the fact that the interviews conducted were lopsided; for some reason, the journalist only interviewed the family of the victim, the police and the heroic neighbor, all sympathetic to the victim, or at the very least neutral to the situation. We hear nothing from the culprits’ families, despite there being more of them, seeing as they were 5 in number. I doubt that all of them declined interviews, and even if any did decline, it was not reported. I believe this is a classic case of gate-keeping on the part of an AP editor, probably aimed at maximizing sympathy for the victim while demonizing the acts of the five bullies.Attitudes and Attitude Changes The news created in the wake of the initial reporting reflected the effect that â€Å"gate-kept† stories such as Brewer’s can create on people’s attitudes. People across the board believe that bullying is wrong, and are vocal against the causes that lead to them. The reactions to the story, as I have read them, have been emotive and condemning, reflecting society’s outrage at incidences such as these. Their subsequent behavior given their feelings is to create blogs and comment angrily on news websites. But such attitudes can be dulled or moderated when sufficient information is given from the bullies’ side, explaining their upbringing and the school environment. It is my belief that had the statistics on the school’s bullying record been included in the original article, most of the outrage would have been directed at school authorities and parent rather than on the offending gang.Uses and Gratifications Theory While I did hear of this story briefly when it broke in October of 2009, I never gave it much attention, considering it just another case of teenage cruelty, one among so many others that happen daily. With this assignment however, I was prompted to actively seek out the story and get as much information about it as I could. I had a purpose for which I was looking for the news, and I dwelt on it in great detail in order to furnish this purpose. This however does not mean that everyone’s opinion on the issue is uniform; some would put more blame on the culprits, some would place more on the parents, other on the school, others on violent TV programs/ movies/ video games, others on the education system in general, etc. Thus the agenda has been set, but not the attitudes and opinions of consumers. Conclusion The Brewer incident is an emotive one, made more so by the manner in which AP reported the incident. Think Personal Development is Optional Think Again Many of my blog articles are about topics that might fall under â€Å"personal development.† These articles are often my favorites to write, and yet there’s sometimes a voice in my head saying, â€Å"Brenda, your readers want to read about something practical! Don’t go overboard here or get too â€Å"woo-woo.† An article I read today gave me encouragement to keep writing these â€Å"self-growth† or â€Å"personal development† articles. August Turak, author of Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks, wrote a piece for Forbes that spoke to me strongly. In it, he lamented that the business world and much of society compartmentalizes personal growth as if it’s something we do on the side to get somewhere or get business results- including becoming a better leader. On the contrary! Turuk argues vehemently that the essence of leadership is to use every opportunity as a means for personal growth. Become a CEO to grow yourself rather than growing yourself so you can get that CEO position. Focus on your higher mission or spiritual development- and success in other aspects of life will be a natural by-product. He asserts, â€Å"The reason you were born is to become the best human being you can possibly be.† So make personal development your mission, rather than using it as a â€Å"means to a more limited end.† Turak holds up the example of Fyodor Dostoevsky, who wrote some of the world’s most classic Russian novels. Said Dostoevsky, â€Å"Man is a mystery. If you spend your entire life trying to puzzle it out do not say that you’ve wasted your time. I occupy myself with this mystery because I want to be a man.† I personally must cop to doing personal growth trainings in part so I will succeed in business, in relationships, in my health, and in every aspect of my life. I have also done what Turak advocates so strongly: taken on new ventures and new relationships with the intention of having those challenges contribute to my growth. Even within my personal development circles, such as my learning group with the Wright training I’m in right now, I take risks and stretch myself in every way I can. That is the fastest path to growth and to being a fully realized human being. This journey is never over, and the puzzle will never be solved. During his detention, he recalls the time modules he knows in an attempt to figure out when will he be free again. He escapes â€Å"out of reach of all the timefors† into a fantasy world. The teacher has almost forgotten about the boy owing to the triviality of the matter to her, but of great significance to the boy. At last, she scuttles in and lets him go home. In â€Å"Piano†, The persona in the poem is listening to a woman singing and playing the piano. This makes him recall when he was a child, sitting under the piano listening to his mother play and sing on Sunday evenings in winter. He is nostalgic about the warmth and happiness of his childhood days. However, he seems to berate himself on recalling his childhood and views himself as sad and less masculine for giving in to his nostalgic impulses. With his ‘manhood cast/Down in the flood of remembrance’, he weeps, an act considered inappropriate for a man. These two poems both use striking language. Firstly, they both use onomatopoeia to convey the setting of the poems. In â€Å"Half-past Two†, the onomatopoeia is used to convey the ticking sound of the clock, whereas in â€Å"Piano†, it is used to convey the musical sounds of the piano. Secondly, they also both use alliteration. In â€Å"Half-past Two†, the phrase ‘time hides tick-less’ is used to convey the sound of a clock ticking. However, in â€Å"Piano†, the repetition of the consonant /s/ is used to convey the calm and quiet singing of the woman. Thirdly, the two poets choose their words prudently. In â€Å"Half-past Two†, childish words such as â€Å"wicked† and â€Å"cross† helps us locate our imaginations within the setting of a primary school. In â€Å"Piano†, the positive word â€Å"cosy† evokes the warm and happy atmosphere when he was a child. On the other hand, negative words ‘betrays’ and ‘insidious’ convey that he is ashamed of his weakness. Fourthly, the use of senses can be found in both poems. In â€Å"Half-past Two†, in stanza 8, the senses such as â€Å"smell of old chrysanthemums† brings alive the scene in the classroom. In â€Å"Piano†, the persona hears the woman singing â€Å"Softly, in the dusk† and playing the piano, recalling his childhood memories. Lastly, the mood of both poems is nostalgic and they both have the theme of childhood. For â€Å"Half-past Two†, I think punishment is not a suitable way to discipline an innocent child who did ‘Something Very Wrong. He should be explained what the error is. The poet uses the teacher to criticize adults who are dismissive of children, emphasized by ‘she slotted him back’. Adults should care and attend to children more. Besides, this poem’s effect on me is so strong that it almost brings me back to my merry childhood. I crave for reliving my childhood, when I lived freely without troubles and worries and time constraints. A nostalgic mood is revealed in the last stanza. It shows that the poet is very nostalgic, reminiscing the childhood experiences when everything is not constrained by time. Moreover, the fantasy world which the child conceives in stanzas 7 & 8 is most people’s utopia, where they can temporarily forget all the stress and worries from work or studies and escape from reality. It is a dream world where all of us can dream about as a solace when we are stressed out. The poem, â€Å"Piano†, has a nostalgic and wistful tone. Hearing the powerful music and soft song, the persona recalls his pleasant childhood memories. He reminisces that he sat ‘under the piano†¦ pressing the small poised feet’ of his mother. However, in the last stanza, ‘my manhood is cast/Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past’. It appears that the persona is rather sentimental and melancholic. He is sad and crying for the time which will never come back after it is forever lost. Besides, the ‘Tingling strings’ and the ‘mastery of song’ strongly evoke the persona’s pleasant childhood memories. It also brings me back to the time when I was a child, learning how to play the piano. I regret not taking piano lessons seriously at that time and dropping it at last. We should treasure everything we possess before they slip away. In my opinion, the persona, being a man, should not cry hastily. I think it is very embarrassing for a grown man to weep. He attempted to restrain his emotions but failed. His heart ‘weeps to belong’ and eventually he bursts into tears. His weeping is uncharacteristic of his present maturity. Nevertheless, I prefer â€Å"Half-past Two†, because it can fully depict the helplessness of the innocent child being kept in until half past two – a time completely unfamiliar to him. I also like the tone of the last stanza. It can trigger my deeper thoughts. It makes me realize that the land where â€Å"time hides tick-less waiting to be born† is a utopia where many people can temporarily forget all the stress and worries and relax.

But reality begs to differ. Mail sent from nonprofit organizations invariably features the word non-profit in the upper right-hand corner, where a stamp would normally be placed. (By contrast, the US Postal Service, on its Web site, correctly styles the term nonprofit but the Internal Revenue Service employs the hyphen, as do many such organizations.) Commercial Web sites and product catalogs invite customers to plan ahead, using the word pre-order, though the dictionary listing is preorder. And many print or online references to peace movements feature the term anti-war, despite the designation of the standard form in virtually all writing resources as antiwar. So, why do descriptivist and prescriptivist handbooks alike exhort readers to close the gap, when so many people who use the English language to communicate in writing ignore or are ignorant of the authorities’ citations? The natural trend in associating words or parts of words is to first combine them in open compounds, later hyphenate them as they become more established, and finally convert them into closed compounds when familiarity is thoroughly achieved (though many compounds remain open or hyphenated long after these evolutionary stages seem overdue). But most writers seemingly a majority of amateurs and definitely too many professionals don’t pay attention to such details, though the standard is easily ascertained by a glance in a dictionary or another resource. The exceptions to the preponderance of closed prefixes are relatively few and more or less simple. Retain a hyphen in the following cases: When the root word is a proper noun (post-Depression) or a number (pre-1914) When the prefix precedes an existing prefix (non-self-governing) When the prefix precedes a proper open compound (â€Å"pre-Civil War†) in such a case, the symbol should technically be an en dash, to help clarify that pre- modifies â€Å"Civil War,† not just the word it is actually attached to, but many publications, print and online, use a simple hyphen When two instances of the letter i or the letter a are adjacent (anti-intellectual, extra-action), or another combination of letters could hamper reading (pro-labor and many other pro- constructions) When a prefix is repeated (anti-antibody) When suspensive hyphenation is employed (â€Å"over- and understimulation†) Also, some people find it awkward to close up co- and a word starting with c (they prefer co-chair to cochair), with o (co-owner is preferred to coowner), or even with any word (coworker, instead of co-worker, annoys many writers). In addition, there are isolated illogical exceptions. For example, why close up reentry but hyphenate de-emphasis? And an otherwise superfluous hyphen is often inserted to distinguish homographs (as with re-count, â€Å"to tally again,† as opposed to recount, â€Å"to narrate†). Some writers ignore this seemingly overcautious strategy, though a clear context doesn’t necessarily obviate it. (Sometimes, the distinction does seem unnecessary: How many people write recreate as the verb form of recreation compared to using the prevalent usage, meaning â€Å"to create again†? But, oddly, the dominant homograph is given the hyphenated form.) Despite this apparent multitude of deviations from the norm, there is a norm: An overwhelming majority of prefixes are closed.
